 BF measurement
Hi everybody!
Just had a medical check up today including a bf-check. They used this new machine, where they put a sensor on your upper arm and then the bf is measured by laser. They said it's quite good, however it turned out that my bf is supposed to be 15´%!!!!!
How correct are these results? If I flex my abs I can clearly see a 6 pack and with the right lightning even 2 lines running down from underneath my lower abs.
Does anybody know if these machines give adequte results or at what % of bf a 6pack usually is visible? (so that I get a rough estimate of what bf I'm more likely to have)
Thanks

15% your abs should be barely showing if at all, only a faint trace of abs at best. I would have someone who really knows what they are doing run another test on you just to see if this doctor is relying on a decent piece of equipment or not.

those machines are garbage. if you got abs you are deffinately below 10%

You're right. Those machines are crap. Found out that the results are highly influenced by the amount of liquid you drank before the test. Had about 1 litre of water just before the test. So screw it!
However, I now know what to rely on: my body feeling, the mirror and input from people that got enough experience on their back

aahhhhh th futurex 5000 near infrared reflection. Those things are absolutely FUCKING HORRIBLE. I hate hate hate them. I went on my diet a few weeks back and got it tested again and it said that I have lost 8 pounds of lean mass and water no fat. my strength is the same and you can so tell that I hvae lost fat. The bitch up at the fitness center was like maybe you should see a nutritionalist if you keep losing muscle I was like fuck that bitch. I hate those things

Calipers should work if the person doing the test knows what they are doing. The best is the water displacement, I have friends who are doing graduate work at an athletic training center. So I am lucky enough to have this test when I need it.
I tried the laser test and I got two results the first time it said I was at less than 2% bodyfat--I'd be dead, the second result said 18%--not even close. I am actually 10% right now and when I did this laser test I was 8%.

That laser sounds sorta like my Tanita scales. I fluctuate from 13-14% in the morning (which I believe to be almost dead on, judging by looks) to under 10% (actually read out at 8.0 this week) at night. Water retention totally, completely, and utterly screws up those measurements.

the futurex 5000 NIR test works off of an infrared light that is emited into your body. Fat reflects ligth at that wavelength while lean mass absorbs. IT then detects the ratio of the ligth transmited to the ligth absorbed and then voila your bf comp.

I had my BF done with that piece of crap they put on your arm too. It said I was 16% I didn't really care much because I know by looking in the mirror I am 11-12% tops because I can see my abs when relaxed and when I flex I can clearly see them, and I onlt train them maybe twice a month because they respond well. Maybe it was messed because I ate a big meal before they did it and I had to take a major piss .
I say don't worry about some number just go by how you look
