When using anabolic steroids it is important to keep in mind of all the side effects that are derived from the production of estrogen in the body. Estrogen is a hormone that is associated with steroids naturally produced in the body. High dosages of steroids for prolonged periods of time will shut down the body’s natural production of certain hormones like testosterone when steroid therapy is stopped.
Normally, the body produces a ratio of testosterone to estrogen that is 100:1. When drugs are taken to increase the testosterone levels it is the body’s natural reaction to produce more estrogen to even out the ratio. Estrogen is bound to the protein SHBG, which is the sex hormone binding globulin which then circulates throughout the body. SHGB is produced in the liver and the use of steroids increases the production of this protein. When there is more SHBG in the body more testosterone is bound so there is more active free estrogen circulating in the body.
The main drugs that will assist you in making sure that your estrogen levels are balanced with your testosterone levels are out there, you just have to make sure you are taking the right ones and the right dosage as well. Clomid and Nolvadex are ovulation stimulants used to treat ovulatory failure in women. The reason body-builders use these drugs are because they considered to be anti-estrogens. These drugs make sure that any estrogen that was produced by the body (exogenous estrogen) cannot find an open receptor to attach to, so free floating estrogen poses no immediate threat to the body.
Some people stop taking these drugs when their cycle is up but that is a bad idea because the high estrogen levels appear after the cycle is finished. You have to use both Clomid and Nolvadex for up to 3 weeks after the last of the drugs have left your body. These 2 drugs should be taken together and the recommended dosages is 20 mg per day of the Nolvadex and 50 mg per day of the Clomid.
There are other drugs out there that can give you the same but they are considered to be in another class of drug and are also called steroid therapy. The actual classification of these drugs is aromatase inhibitors and they just prevent the process from occurring and are generally prescribed for severe conditions.
Testolactone (Teslac) is no longer a favorite because it is currently a scheduled drug and one gram is needed to achieve estrogen synthesis inhibition.
Aminoglutethimide (cytadren) only requiring 250-500 mg per dosage this is a better choice. It also fights Cushing’s syndrome because it also interferes with the body’s ability to synthesis cortisol. Make sure you are taking the right dosage because cytadren can cause cysts as well as blood clotting.
Anatrozole (arimidex) is designed to fight the second stage of breast cancer. Due to the potency of this drug, only one pill is sufficient to inhibit estrogen in the body.
Of all of these inhibitors the most useful drug to a body builder is Arimidex. Another drug is Proviron, this binds to androgen receptors and also helps prevent excess testosterone from converting into estrogen. It is more effective when used with Clomid or Nolvadex.
There has been scientific evidence that brought up the issue of anti-estrogen usage, because they were saying that the excessive use of anti-estrogens will actually result in a loss of so some of the most anabolic of hormones.
